Field Observation Report

Location:
South Dakota, Black Hills, Iron Creek Lake
Date:
2010JUN03 to 2010JUN07
Observer:
Peter Leitheiser

Summary:
Least Chipmunk (Tamias minimus silvaticus)

Chipmunks are common in the Black Hills, even on top of the peaks. They are fast animals. Many of my pictures were nothing but a blur. When foraging they probably cover a lot of area quickly. In the Ponderosa pine forests of the Black Hills, I wounder if, being unable to peal a pine cone like the red squirrels, the chipmunks clean up nuts the reds may have dropped.
