Sciuridae Sciurus niger (fox squirrel) Image Caption: A fox squirrel extracts pine nuts while hiding between branches of a Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris). Pine cones are a labor intensive food source, and if squirrels work harder to extract the seeds, the it is more likely to drop a nut and seed a new pine tree. It took this animal an average of eight minutes to eat the seeds from one pinecone. |
