Sciuridae
Sciurus niger
(fox squirrel)
Image Caption:
Most wildlife are pests to at least
some professional, and these little thieves are no exception. Squirrels can
have severe impact on nut orchards and will eat cherry blossoms and pears in
fruit orchards (Jackson, 2005). People use a wide range of control
techniques from shooting and trapping, to individually administer
squirrel birth control (Krause, 2008). Although not always possible for the
unfenceable, ubiquitous animals, the best long term eradication solution would
be to remove the rodent's access to a food supply.
Although stopping at one point to
try unsuccessfully to bury the corn, the pictured animal finished off the whole
cob before returning to its nest, probably to sleep. It likely scavenged it
from a harvested corn field adjacent the woods. |
