Sciuridae Tamiasciurus douglasii (Douglas' squirrel) Image Caption: A Douglas' pine squirrel sits on a piece of rotting wood. This animal's smaller size, gray-brown back, and sometimes yellowish belly distinguish it (Steele, 1999, p. 1) from the similar but more common red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). The Douglas' pine squirrel is also similar in appearence to Mearns's Squirrel (Tamiasciurus mearnsi) in Mexico, but the ranges of the Douglas' squirrel and Mearns's squirrel do not overlap (Steele, 1999, p. 1). |
