Sciuridae Spermophilus richardsonii (Richardson's ground squirrel) Image Caption: Young Richardson's ground squirrels venture out of their burrow to forage grass nearby. The young have been active above ground for at least two days, but did not range more than two or three meters from the burrow's openings. As the young gain confidence above ground, they will range farther and farther from the opening of their burrow. In a study by Gunderson, squirrels ranged about 2 meters on the first day, 3 meters on the second day, 15 meters on the 7th day, and by two weeks, most had left their natal burrow (1961, p 60, 64). |
